CWA’s Annual Flush will take place March 9-13th from 8 am to 3 pm. It is recommended to reduce the use of your water during these times to help prevent any of the brown water being flushed getting into your home’s pipes. Avoid using hot water if possible to help reduce the chance of the sediment getting into your hot water tank.
Key reasons for this practice include:
- Improved Water Quality: By flushing out settled minerals and sediment, water providers ensure cleaner, better-tasting water.
- Preventive Maintenance: It is used to “exercise” valves and hydrants, ensuring they function correctly in emergencies.
- System Disinfection: This high-velocity cleaning removes sediment, mineral buildup (iron/rust), and biofilm from pipes and restores chlorine residuals, reducing bacterial growth.
- Sediment Removal: High-velocity water scours the inside of water mains, reducing corrosion.
- Flow Testing: It confirms that adequate water pressure is available for firefighting
While this process may cause temporary water discoloration (harmless silt/sediment), it is essential for maintaining a safe and reliable water distribution system. If you experience discolored water, please run your outside hose faucet for 10 minutes at a medium flow. If water remains discolored after that, please call the office or the on-call number if it is after hours.
